The Redemptive Resilience of Sandra Cisneros

Sandra Cisneros will be joining the 30th Anniversary Writer鈥檚 Symposium by the Sea for an afternoon workshop and evening interview with Dean Nelson. 

Sandra Cisneros is an American short-story writer and poet best known for her groundbreaking evocation of Mexican American life in Chicago in her New York Times bestselling book The House on Mango Street. Her books include a chapbook of poetry, Bad Boys; two full-length poetry books, My Wicked Wicked Ways and Loose Woman; a collection of stories, Woman Hollering Creek and Other Stories; a children's book, Hairs/Pelitos; the novels The House on Mango Street and Caramelo; the picture book Have You Seen Marie?; a memoir, A House of My Own: Stories from My Life; and an illustrated bilingual story, Puro Amor. Her most recent books are Martita, I Remember You/Martita te recuerdo and a poetry collection, Mujer sin verg眉enza.

Cisneros has received numerous awards and fellowships for her writing, including the American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation for The House on Mango Street and the PEN Center West Award for Best Fiction for Woman Hollering Creek and Other Stories

She also received two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and one from the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, which led to Cisneros鈥 organization of the Latino MacArthur Fellows, Los MacArturos. Cisneros was awarded the National Medal of Arts (2015) by U.S. President Barack Obama. Most recently, she was awarded the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize by the Poetry Foundation. 

Cisneros continues to make a positive impact on her community in her work with the Macondo Foundation and the Alfredo Cisneros Del Moral Foundation for writers.
