STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE AT ¹ú²ú¾çÂ鶹¾ç

¹ú²ú¾çÂ鶹¾ç is committed to maintaining an environment where students are safe and healthy. For the safety of the community and the well-being of our students, it is vital that individuals living on campus have access to quality health care in the event of illness or accident.

Considering this commitment to a healthy community, undergraduate students that are registered for classes on the main campus must have valid comprehensive health insurance coverage. For each year of enrollment, students must have proof of active health insurance on the student portal, even if they are studying abroad and regardless of the number of units enrolled.

The University highly recommends that students validate their health insurance on the portal prior to Welcome Week and the start of classes. If you are a new or readmitted student, upload a copy of the front and back of your Insurance Card to the Patient Portal. This is done by signing in to your OneLogin, clicking on the 'Point N Click Patient Portal' icon, and navigating to the 'Insurance Card' section on the left side menu.

International Student Health Insurance

To assist with health insurance coverage that satisfies the requirements of the Affordable Care Act for all international students, the University provides a competitive, affordable international student health insurance plan through AHP (insurance broker). International students (undergraduate, graduates and student-athletes) are automatically enrolled into the program for each semester of study at ¹ú²ú¾çÂ鶹¾ç.

Please visit the website for more information on the medical care that is available through this plan. For any additional questions about the insurance coverage, please contact AHP at (800) 537-1777 (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PST). For additional support, please contact the Designated School Official in the Office of Multicultural & International Student Services.

Mandatory Student Accident (MSA) Plan

¹ú²ú¾çÂ鶹¾ç has partnered with Relation Insurance Services to provide valuable accident coverage for all undergraduate students registered for classes on the main campus and graduate student-athletes.  MSA insurance is supplemental coverage for medical expenses incurred for accidental injury.  The MSA does not provide coverage for general health, preventative services or sickness related costs.

The mandatory annual cost of the plan is less than $40 per student per year; costs are included in the tuition billing statement. The plan provides coverage whether or not college is in session, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The effective date of coverage for enrolled students is August 1, 2024 to August 1, 2025.

To download a plan brochure, benefit snapshot, claims form and more, visit . For questions about MSA enrollment or submitting claims forms, contact Relation Insurance Services at (800) 445-3126 (Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time).

Plan Ahead for Health Care for Academic Success and Well-being

Any time individuals move to new communities, it is important to establish relationships with new medical, dental, and vision providers. We highly recommended that students and their families thoroughly review their health insurance coverage and discuss access to local health care providers while in the San Diego area. Planning ahead for possible future needs lowers student stress and eases family concerns should emergency or preventative care be needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my student aid continue to be available to cover both health insurance and tuition?

When calculating your costs to attend ¹ú²ú¾çÂ鶹¾ç, be sure to include the cost of health insurance along with your other charges. While ¹ú²ú¾çÂ鶹¾ç no longer has an insurance company partner who can offer health insurance, the same financial aid resources will be available to cover the costs of attending the university.

Your Student Account Advisor will be happy to assist you in reviewing any charges and the amount of financial aid for which you are eligible. Under the previous policy, ¹ú²ú¾çÂ鶹¾ç would have automatically paid your premiums with those funds from your student account. The difference under the new policy is that you will request a refund and, in turn, pay your own insurance charges. Again, the same amount of financial aid resources will be available, this has not changed.

How do I buy health insurance?

With the changes occurring in health care across the country today, what was true a year ago, may not be true today.  As a result, it is important to have a discussion with a current insurance agent who is aware of the various healthcare policies available.

If you are struggling with the question of whether or not you can afford a policy, you may talk with Debbie Hickman, who can direct you to a range of organizations that provide healthcare assistance. Debbie can be reached at (619) 849-2574 or sdwellnesscenter@pointloma.edu.

What are the most cost effective plans for health insurance?

That will depend on your income and your health care needs. Before you settle on a plan, you should first get a quote, find a price, and discover any out-of-pocket expenses your plan will expect you to pay (such as deductibles, co-insurance, and copay charges). Once you have all of this information together, it will be easier to find coverage which fits your needs.
